Pre-galvanized Steel Tube Round SHS RHS Q235B Q355B
Pre-Galvanized Steel Pipe (often abbreviated as Pre-GI Pipe) refers to a steel tube that is manufactured from steel coils which have already been coated with a protective layer of zinc. The galvanizing happens before the pipe is formed.
key characteristics
-Manufacturing Process: The process begins with a steel coil (often made of materials like Q235B). This flat sheet is fed through a continuous hot-dip galvanizing line, where it gets a zinc coating. This coated sheet is then slit and formed into a tube, and the seam is welded.
-Zinc Coating: Because the zinc is applied to a flat surface, the coating is very uniform and smooth. However, the zinc layer is typically thinner compared to pipes that are galvanized after fabrication.
-Typical Coating Thickness: Minimum ~12 µm (micrometers) .
-Appearance: It has a bright, shiny, and smooth surface finish, which is aesthetically pleasing.
Key Advantage: It is more cost-effective for large-scale production and projects where extremely heavy outdoor corrosion protection is not the primary concern.
Applications:
Due to its good looks and sufficient protection for indoor or mild outdoor environments, it is widely used for:
*Electrical conduits .
*Scaffolding and lightweight structural frames.
*Greenhouse frames and agricultural equipment.
*Furniture and interior decoration components.
Key Distinction with Hot-Dipped Galvanized (HDG)
Key Distinction: Do not confuse this with Hot-Dipped Galvanized (HDG) steel pipe. For HDG pipes, the finished pipe is pickled and then dipped into a bath of molten zinc. This results in a much thicker zinc coating (minimum ~45 µm) and provides superior corrosion resistance for harsh outdoor applications, but at a higher cost.
Material Grades: Q235B and Q355B
These are Chinese Standard structural steel grades (GB/T 700 and GB/T 1591). The "Q" stands for Yield Strength ("Qu" in Chinese Pinyin). The number indicates the minimum yield strength in MPa (Megapascals) for the thinnest sections. The "B" suffix denotes the quality grade, which specifies the required impact test temperature (in this case, room temperature, 20°C).
Q235B Steel Grade (This is the most common carbon structural steel)
Type: Carbon Steel.
Yield Strength (min): 235 MPa.
Tensile Strength: 375 - 500 MPa .
Key Properties: Good plasticity, toughness, and weldability. It is the standard, economical choice for general purpose structures.
Chemical Composition (Key Elements):
Carbon (C): ≤ 0.20%
Manganese (Mn): 0.30% - 0.70%
Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.045%
Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.045%
Typical Applications: General building construction, bridges, ships, and as the base metal for pre-galvanized pipes where high strength is not the main requirement
Q355B Steel Grade(This is a low-alloy high-strength structural steel (the successor to the older 16Mn grade).
Type: High-Strength Low-Alloy (HSLA) Steel.
Yield Strength (min): 355 MPa (for thickness ≤ 16mm).
Tensile Strength: 470 - 630 MPa .
Key Properties: Higher strength than Q235B, allowing for lighter structures with less material. It also offers good weldability and toughness. The increased strength comes from the addition of alloying elements like Manganese (Mn).
Chemical Composition (Key Elements):
Carbon (C): ≤ 0.20%
Manganese (Mn): 1.20% - 1.60% (Significantly higher than Q235B).
Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.035%
Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.035%
Typical Applications: High-rise buildings, large-scale venues, bridges, vehicles, and heavy-duty machinery where higher load-bearing capacity is required.
